Trick or treat: Do kids prefer toys to Halloween candy?
Halloween is a time for costumes, tricks and treats. However,
a new study suggests that some kids may prefer toys over treats.
Published in the Society for Nutrition Education Journal, the
study reported that, when offered a choice, children are just as
likely to choose a toy as candy.
The small study sampled children ages 3 to 14 on their preferences. The
trick-or-treaters were offered one plate of small Halloween toys
and one plate of candy. The Halloween toys were equal in
value to the candy and included stickers, rings, ghostly insects
and goblins.
The study showed that nearly half of the children chose non-candy
treats over traditional chocolate and sugar. While the number of
kids in the study was relatively small, the findings provide support
for parents who may want to try alternative Halloween treat ideas.
