Exercise for Your Brain’s Sake
Did you know there are major mental benefits
of regular exercise? As we age, neurons in the brain slowly start
to die off, affecting memory and the ability to learn. Until recently,
scientists thought this was permanent. Not so!
A recent study conducted
by the National Academy of Sciences showed that people who worked
out for three months seemed to grow new nerve cells in the area
of the brain that controls learning and memory. Those with the
greatest gains in cardiovascular fitness grew the most new neurons.
In essence, the aging of this part of the brain is reversed by
consistent exercise.
