Governor Sonny Perdue
Declares Diabetes Control Week
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly
use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches
and other food in to energy needed for daily life. In a recent survey
by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, it was
found that more than 2 out of 3 people in Georgia with type 2 diabetes
do not have their diabetes under control. Blood sugar levels that
are higher than recommended target increase the risk of developing
serious and life-threatening complications, including heart attack,
stroke, blindness, kidney failure and loss of limb.
Significant progress has been made in the last few decades in the
areas of research and diagnosis for diabetes, resulting in improved
quality of life for individuals living with the disease. Meal planning,
regular physical activity and if needed, medications are the cornerstones
to achieving stability.
Governor
Sonny Perdue has proclaimed November 21-25 as DIABETES CONTROL WEEK
in Georgia.
