Event: 12th Annual Atlanta Diabetes University

When: November 6, 2004
Where: Atlanta Apparel Mart

Event Description:

Atlanta Diabetes University (ADU) was established to provide up-to-date information to people with diabetes, their families or support persons, and health care professionals such as school nurses. ADU is a one-day seminar held annually in the fall. This event is filled with education classes and demonstrations to help people understand the disease and learn new information about managing diabetes. Participants are also able to speak with community representatives and corporate sponsors about diabetes products and services.

This full day event is a must for anyone with diabetes. Classes on a variety of diabetes-related topics will be taught by leaders in the field. Dr. Scott Isaacs will be leading a program on weight management. Atlanta Diabetes University is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, Diabetes Association of Atlanta, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Greater Atlanta Association of Diabetes Educators.

Dr. Isaacs will be speaking on "Battle of the Bulge: Weight Management. Understanding the Connection Between Diabetes and Weight Management and Resources to Use in Reaching Your Goal."

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Review the ADA Goals for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
  • Define Insulin Resistance
  • Identify the impact of weight loss on insulin resistance
  • Define the terms overweight, obese, morbidly obese, and body mass index (BMI)
  • Understand the potential benefits of weight loss for people with diabetes
  • Review ADA recommendations for moderate weight loss, differentiating between "ideal" and "reasonable"
  • Calculate BMI using a table, chart, handout, or BMI wheel
  • Recognize the importance of lifestyle change and behavior modification in successful weight loss and maintenance
  • List factors that may determine body weight, e.g., choices of food, portions, activity level, heredity and body build, body metabolism, and use of certain medications
  • State recommended minimum calories for weight loss
  • Discuss the role of carbohydrate, protein and fat in weight management
  • State practical ways to decrease calories without decreasing the amount of food or eliminating specific food groups.
  • Identify education and support resources
